“Fête de l’Escalade” bit of history
It is in the night of December 11 to 12, 1602 that the scene is played. Charles Emmanuel, Duke of Savoy, decides to attack Geneva to make it count among his States.
With the force of more than 2000 men he launches the assault in the silence of the night and tries to infiltrate the protective walls of the old city.But luckily, during a round, soldiers spotted the undesirables and by a shot give warning to the whole city, the toscin of the Cathedral resounds and the Genevans take up arms.Geneva is victorious and prays for those inhabitants who lost their lives defending the city.In memory of this event, each year, the company 1602 commemorates in life size this bloody night, the weekend closest to December 11/12.It is this weekend, December 8,9 and 10 that will be celebrated this battle, see the program on the website of the company 1602: http://www.1602.ch/For the record, on this occasion the Genevans break chocolate pot in memory of the Mother Kingdom, who tonight, heard the soldiers and spilled on one of them his pot filled with soup.Secret: A secret passage that starts from the old town will be during the festivities, open to the public.
